How to Prevent a Power Outage

Although many power outages are unexpected, there are precautions you can take as a homeowner to help prevent the risk of a power outage. Listed below are a few tips to decrease the chances of an emergency power outage.

  • Prune your hedges and your trees – If your trees are not properly maintained, they can disrupt power lines and affect entire neighborhoods.
  • Dig safely – If you plan on digging near your home, call 811 or 800-332-2344 to ensure that you are digging safely.
  • Schedule routine maintenance – If you have a backup power generator, schedule yearly maintenance. This can keep you safe in the event of your home losing power.
  • Keep a Close Eye on Your Surroundings – Pay attention to electrical hazards, such as unruly neighborhood trees or transformer boxes located too close to fire hazards.

What to Do in The Event of a Power Outage

If a power outage occurs in your home and there are no other immediate emergencies, the first thing to consider is perishable food items. If the loss of power lasts for only a few hours, then your food will be preserved. An unopened refrigerator can keep its temperature for approximately four hours. As long you keep the refrigerator door closed, your food will be safe from spoiling. An alternative method to preserving your food is having a cooler on hand in case you need to freeze items for an extended period of time.

Keep flashlights and extra batteries handy in case of a power outage. Candles are not recommended, as they can be a potential fire hazard. Additionally, if it is cold outside, put on layers of warm clothing. Never burn charcoal for heating or cooking indoors. If your home is unbearably cold, plan to stay at a different location with power.

When the power finally comes back on, it could cause a damaging electric surge to your devices. During a power outage, turn off and disconnect appliances and other equipment. If you have a backup generator, only operate it away from your home and garage. If you have questions about using and installing a backup generator, call Beaver Electric and we’ll be happy to help!
