Sudden power outages can be scary and inconvenient for many reasons. You never know when the electricity will be back on, and without a backup generator power it is best to be prepared. At. Beaver Electric, we want you to have as much knowledge as possible when it comes to electrical safety. That includes letting you know how you can be prepared when the power goes out.
If a power outage lasts less than two hours there is no need to worry about losing your perishable foods. An unopened refrigerator can keep food cold for approximately four hours. As long as you leave the refrigerator closed as much as possible it will stay cold enough for your food. Another good practice is to keep a cooler on hand in case the electricity is out for an extensive period – cheap Styrofoam coolers work well.
Keep flashlights and extra batteries handy in case of a power outage. Candles are an even worse fire hazard during an outage. Additionally, if it is cold outside, put on layers of warm clothing. Never burn charcoal for heating or cooking indoors. If it is too cold, plan to stay at a different location with power.
When the power finally comes back on it could cause a damaging electric surge to your devices. During a power outage, turn off and disconnect appliances and other equipment. If you have a backup generator, only operate it away from your home and garage. If you have questions about using and installing a backup generator, call Beaver Electric and we’ll be happy to help!
